Why this comparison, and how I'm running it
I'm the operations lead at a fabric supplier. Over the past six years, I've handled 200+ rush orders — mostly from apparel brands in sleepwear, activewear, and performance basics. When I say "rush order," I mean a client ordered on a Friday and needed cut panels by Thursday. Not usually.
When a buyer calls at 2 a.m. staring at a production calendar that's about to slip, the options on their mind are almost always the same: bamboo fiber fabric, cotton modal, straight cotton, polyester spandex, and moisture wicking fabric. They never ask "which is best." They ask: which one is right for my price point and my deadline?
So that's the comparison frame. I'm breaking it into four dimensions: hand feel, wash performance, moisture management, and cost plus supply. Each dimension gets a verdict. No "it depends on your needs" filler.
Dimension 1: Hand feel and what consumers actually perceive
Bamboo fabric for clothes wins the sensory contest almost every time it's tested. It drapes. It feels cool on the hand. Bamboo fiber pajama fabric in particular is the easiest sell in a subscription box or DTC listing — the consumer opens the package, touches the fabric, and immediately trusts the brand.
Cotton modal fabric comes in second. Modal is a beechwood pulp viscose, and blending it into cotton softens the cotton's natural crispness. The result is smoother than plain cotton, but less slippery than bamboo.
Straight cotton pajama fabric is the familiar baseline. It feels sturdy on the first touch, and shoppers who grew up wearing cotton will rate it as "more comfortable" in blind tests, even when it objectively isn't.
Polyester spandex fabric is the technical pick. Spandex brings stretch. Polyester brings shape retention. The hand is smooth rather than soft — unless the mill has put serious finish work into the blend.
The counterintuitive finding: in blind touch tests, consumers frequently rate a structured cotton fabric as "more comfortable" than an objectively softer bamboo, simply because it feels familiar. Cotton has been on the shelf for 200 years. Bamboo feels better but feels different.
If you're launching a new brand with no consumer expectation, go bamboo or cotton modal. If you're restocking an existing line, don't drift too far from the hand feel your customer already knows.
Dimension 2: Wash performance (where things actually go wrong)
This is the column that has cost me money.
Bamboo fabric for clothes: pilling is a real complaint. The first 20 washes are fine. Then the cuffs and side seams start forming fuzz balls. Not every batch — but often enough that you need to test proactively, not reactively.
Cotton modal fabric: better than pure bamboo on pilling, generally. Modal fibers are stronger than they're given credit for, and blending with cotton tends to reduce the pilling that pure viscose would produce. If I remember correctly, our longest-lasting cotton modal test held up through 40 commercial wash cycles before showing meaningful pilling.
Cotton pajama fabric: shrinks, and it fades. Both are manageable with pre-shrunk processing and controlled temperatures, and both need to be on the wash label. If a supplier quotes cotton without discussing shrinkage data, that's the flag.
Polyester spandex fabric: best shape retention of the group. The mesh or piqué construction gives the fabric a skeleton, and the spandex keeps the recovery working. A well-made polyester spandex garment can go 50 washes and still hold roughly the shape it shipped in — provided you don't bake it in the dryer.
Moisture wicking fleece fabric: wash performance depends on the fleece construction. Short-staple brushed fleece pills. Long-staple fleece, and especially fleece built from a performance fiber like Coolmax, holds up much better because the fiber itself has less tendency to entangle.
We skipped the pre-production wash test on one order because the previous three batches of the same SKU had been fine. "What could go wrong?" The fourth batch — same SKU, different mill — shrunk 6% more than spec. We paid $400 in air freight to replace-hope fabric and keep the client's line on schedule. The number might be off by a bit. That lesson isn't.
Dimension 3: Moisture management — the dimension that actually separates tiers
If you only read one section of this comparison, this is the one.
Cotton pajama fabric absorbs sweat but dries slowly. It feels clammy on the skin and stays damp until you take it off. For sleepwear, that's a real overnight problem.
Bamboo fabric for clothes is better than cotton here, but it still holds water inside the fiber structure. Do not let anyone sell you "bamboo = moisture wicking." They aren't the same thing. Bamboo breathes. It doesn't actively push moisture away.
Cotton modal is maybe 10 to 15% faster drying than straight cotton. Helpful, not generational.
Moisture wicking fleece fabric — and polyester spandex built on performance fiber platforms like Coolmax — operate on a different physical principle. The wicking action comes from engineered fiber cross-sections that push water to the surface, spread it, and let it evaporate. In side-by-side dry tests, capillary wicking rates run 3 to 5 times faster than cotton, depending on the specific spec.
Moisture wicking fleece fabric combines that performance with loft for warmth. It's the standard choice for base layers, winter activewear, and fleece-lined jackets. If you're building in those categories, the performance gap isn't cosmetic — it's the product.
In my opinion, the upcharge for a performance fiber pays itself back in the first selling season, in reduced returns alone.
Dimension 4: Cost, MOQ, and lead time
Here are the per-yard ex-works ranges we collected in Q1 2025 from three mills in Zhejiang and one in Portugal. Prices move. Verify before you quote.
- Cotton pajama fabric (180–200 gsm, knit): $2.10–3.20/yard
- Polyester spandex fabric (~200 gsm, 4-way stretch): $2.80–4.20/yard
- Bamboo fabric for clothes (bamboo/cotton blend, 160–180 gsm): $3.40–5.10/yard
- Cotton modal fabric (50/50 or 60/40 blend): $3.80–5.80/yard
- Moisture wicking fleece fabric (with wicking finish, 240–280 gsm): $4.50–7.00/yard
I get why most first-time buyers default to cotton. Honestly, I do. On an 8,000-unit pajama run, that $1.30/yard gap between cotton and bamboo is $10,400 — enough to fund a whole quarter of ad spend.
But cotton usually gives that savings back somewhere else: return rates, exchanges, bad reviews. And in the rush-order world, the most common way it gives it back is via air freight on a replacement batch.
We lost a $22,000 contract in 2023 because we tried to save $1,500 by staying on cotton instead of moving the order to a blend. The client's wash test flagged shrinkage after the second wash. They rejected 60% of the shipment. We ate the return and the replacement. That's the day we started requiring shrinkage data from every mill before we quote a low-gsm cotton knit.
So which one do you pick?
Fast rules of thumb, by scenario:
- Pick cotton pajama fabric if your brand story depends on "classic" and "traditional," your customers wash things the way they always have, and your price point can absorb a 30–40% return rate at production scale.
- Pick bamboo fabric for clothes if you're selling the premium sleepwear story — subscription, DTC, sustainable narrative — and you're willing to test every batch.
- Pick cotton modal fabric if you want the natural-fiber halo with less pilling drift and less shrinkage drama. It's the lower-risk middle option.
- Pick polyester spandex fabric if you need stretch, shape, and wash-recovery, and your customer base isn't expecting a "natural" hand feel.
- Pick moisture wicking fleece fabric — ideally on a Coolmax-type platform — if the end use involves sweat, thermoregulation, or dry time. The performance gap here is big enough to sell itself.
The lesson I keep relearning: the lowest quote is rarely the lowest cost. In 200+ rush orders, the failures I've seen almost never happened because the fabric was cheap. They happened because the spec was vague. Ask about gsm, blend ratio, finishing, shrinkage, and test methods — before you order, not after.
Your customer is going to ask those questions anyway.
