Buying Coolmax? It Depends. Here's How to Match the Fiber to Your Product.

There’s no “best” Coolmax. There’s only the right one for your customer’s needs.

When I took over purchasing for a mid-sized outdoor apparel brand in 2021, my first big project was sourcing moisture-wicking fabrics. The R&D team wanted “Coolmax.” Sales wanted “Coolmax.” My boss just wanted it to not cost a fortune.

I started calling suppliers. And I quickly hit a wall: everyone said they sold Coolmax, but the specs sheets were all over the place. Some felt like a light polyester mesh, others like a brushed knit. One vendor even showed me a fabric that felt exactly like cotton. I was confused. “Isn’t Coolmax just... a thing?”

Turns out, it’s not. Coolmax is a brand of fiber technologies from INVISTA (formerly DuPont), and it comes in several distinct variants. Picking the wrong one for your application is like buying engine oil for a salad—technically both are liquids, but you're going to have a bad time.

So, here’s how I learned to match the fiber to the product. It’s not a one-size-fits-all answer, but a branching path based on your end-use case.

Scenario A: Next-to-Skin Apparel (T-shirts, Base Layers, Athletic Wear)

The common mistake: People think any “moisture-wicking” fabric works for a t-shirt. They order a heavy-duty outer layer fabric because it has a high Coolmax content, and end up with a shirt that feels scratchy and traps heat. The customer returns it. Then the brand blames the supplier. I’ve seen this cycle three times.

What actually works: For direct skin contact, you want Coolmax Fresh FX or Coolmax All Season. These are typically finer denier fibers that feel soft and have a mechanical stretch. The key metric here isn't just “wicking,” it’s drying speed and hand feel.

  • Fresh FX: Has antimicrobial properties built in. Great for gym wear or travel clothes that might get worn twice before washing.
  • All Season: A 4-channel fiber that pulls moisture away fast. For a basic tee, this is your workhorse.

When I compared our Q1 and Q2 underwear sales side-by-side, I finally understood why the fiber count matters so much. The line that used 150-denier Coolmax All Season had a 12% lower return rate than the line that used a generic 200-denier wicking polyester. Small spec, big impact.

Scenario B: Mid-Layer & Outer Layers (Jackets, Vests, Liners)

The common mistake: Trying to use a light, drapey fabric for a jacket. It flops, it doesn’t hold structure, and the customer feels like they’re wearing a trash bag. I had a vendor who tried to sell me a 120gsm Coolmax for a softshell vest. It looked terrible on the hanger.

What actually works: For outer layers, you need Coolmax Thermolite or a Coolmax/Polyester blend with a 200+ denier. These are engineered for insulation and durability. The focus shifts from “drying speed” to thermal efficiency and durability.

Honestly, I’m not sure why some vendors push lightweight Coolmax for jackets. My best guess is they’re trying to save money on raw material. A good Thermolite lining will keep a skier warm even when the jacket is wet. A cheap Coolmax blend will just get cold and clammy.

For a hiking vest, I’d spec a Coolmax Thermolite Pro with a DWR finish. The durability against backpack straps is critical.

Scenario C: Bedding & Non-Apparel (Mattress Toppers, Sheets, Socks)

The paradox: “Coolmax” sounds like a hot-weather product. So why does it work in winter socks and mattress pads? Because it regulates temperature, not just cools.

What actually works: For bedding and socks, the standard Coolmax (the original inline fiber) is often the best. How to figure out which scenario you’re in

Stop looking at the “Coolmax” label and start reading the Spec Sheet. Ask your supplier these questions:

  1. What is the denier? (Under 100 = skin contact. Over 150 = outer layer.)
  2. Is it a blend? (100% Coolmax is rare. 50% Coolmax/50% Polyester is common for structure. 70% Cotton/30% Coolmax is a thing for “performance-cotton.”)
  3. What is the application history? (Ask: “Have you sold this exact spec to a sock maker? A t-shirt maker?”)
  4. What is the yarn cost? (As of June 2025, expect a premium of 15-25% over generic polyester. If a vendor quotes you the same price as standard polyester, they’re not selling the real thing or the spec is wrong.)

Look, I'm not saying one Coolmax is better than another. I'm saying that choosing the wrong variant is worse than buying a generic alternative. The INVISTA branding isn't just marketing—it's a guarantee of a specific capillary action profile. If you're making a high-end technical garment, the cost difference of $0.15 per yard is irrelevant compared to the cost of a brand reputation hit.

Do your due diligence. And for the love of good products, never spec a mattress pad fabric for a hiking jacket.
